Metabolic changes due to cancer

The growth and functioning of all the cells in our body requires a supply of energy and a sufficient amount of fluids and micronutrients. Energy is bound mainly in the so-called energy substrates: carbohydrates (sugars), lipids (fats), proteins. Under normal circumstances, energy substrates are absorbed in the digestive tract. As a result of the cancer or its treatment, the body’s ability to absorb these substances may change or its ability to eat may change. These changes can lead to a deterioration in nutritional status. A common sign of a deterioration in nutritional status is a change in weight or loss of muscle mass.

Important facts about unwanted weight loss and cachexia

Physical weakness, unwanted weight loss and muscle mass due to the disease are manifestations of the so-called cachexia. Cachexia is a well-known side effect of cancer and its treatment. The processes of cachexia are extremely complex. It is a reaction of the organism associated with inflammation, which is caused by the tumor, but also by the immune system itself. Cachexia can lead to many complications, including: decreased appetite, reduced tolerance of therapy (radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery). These complications can result in interruption or reduction of treatment and the patient loses valuable time.

Cachexia is a complex metabolic syndrome that leads to tissue degradation and an imbalance in the intake and consumption of all macro- and micronutrients. It is not possible to solve it simply by overeating or standard nutritional supplements. In this case, your doctor may prescribe nutritional support in the form of so-called Sipping or enteral nutrition for drinking.

Does ProSure® nutrition have any side effects?

ProSure® is well tolerated by patients. Patients with pancreatic cancer may need to be monitored to adjust the coverage of pancreatic enzymes. These patients taking ProSure® to increase their overall dietary nutrient intake may therefore need more pancreatic enzymes. ProSure® has a lower fat content than standard enteral nutrition products because many cancer patients have difficulty digesting and tolerating fats. The total fat content is 5.6 g per 220 ml bottle.

What is the recommended daily dose of ProSure®?

Two ProSure® drinks per day are recommended. ProSure® should be used if the patient is at risk of malnutrition or is already malnourished due to cachexia.

How can the taste of ProSure® be improved?

ProSure® has been designed to reflect the taste preferences of cancer patients and is available in five flavors – banana, coffee, chocolate, forest fruit and vanilla. ProSure® can also be combined with various types of regular foods, blended into coffee, ice cream or frozen into ice cubes to make patients taste even better. In this application you will also find recipes that include ProSure® drinks.
